Be Kind (to yourself) Rewind: It’s a Challenge!

So Thursday’s on the GETFIERCE page are all about challenging ourselves. These challenges are meant to build ourselves up, to feel good, to be strong and to grow! This week’s it’s all about testing our mental FIERCENESS.

The Week 2 Challenge

Notice  all the ‘mean’ things you say to yourself all day. They can be thoughts you’re thinking or words you say out loud.

My Experience

The first time I did this challenge I was BLOWN AWAY at how many negative thoughts I was thinking about myself. I look in the mirror a lot during the day while I’m teaching and even in those moments when I’m focused on class I was still (and still do at times) having thoughts like, “Why’d you wear this?”, “Ugh, look at your thighs, they’re huge! You’re Disgusting!” Forget about when someone leaves class early or looks like they’re not havign the time of their life! I go straight to what I did wrong…those thoughts are terrible! “She/he hates me”,  “I’m sure they’re just here cuz I’m the only option.” The thoughts were constant and SO mean. I wouldn’t talk to my friends or family like that (or I wouldn’t be friends with someone who spoke to me like that), so why is okay to speak to myself like that?

I quickly began to ‘snap out’ of the nasty habit of mean self talk, solely because I was aware it was happening. I still have my moments, but they are much fewer and far between.

Check Yo’Self

I want you (I’m in too) for the next week to notice all the ‘mean’ or ‘unkind’ words you say to yourself. Be Kind, Rewind! Take a second to notice it and then mentally apologize to yourself, “I’m sorry, D. I didn’t mean it. You’re ________(fill in the blank with a kind uplifting word to undo the nasty) I didn’t mean it. I love you’. The game is by the end to not have the mean things pop in. It takes time, but the start is to notice and be aware.

FIERCENESS

It’s not just about our bods, or our jobs, or our relationships, our financial circumstance…it’s a confidence in it ALL! Loving ourselves as a whole, loving each and everything about us…the dimples (both on the face and ass), the scars, the smiles, the way you walk, talk, cry, yell, everything! It’s the everything that makes you YOU! It’s perfect or it wouldn’t BE you!

The Goal

I want this week to be an eye opening experience for you like it was for me. I want you to be your own best friend. Be a champion for you. Give yourself a pat on the back. Talk yourself up.. Be your own PIMP! If you don’t believe in you, Honey, believe me, no one else will.

In regards to this challenge I had really one question. “It’s a confidence in it all.” A lot of times we have to be confident and believe in ourselves, but my question pertains as to where do we derive the confidence from. I mean each individual is characterized / developed based on past experiences and influenced by those around them. Those that have succeeded in the past have a strong sense of confidence in themselves. Graduating Magna / Summa Cum Laude, captaining a lacrosse team to the state championships, presenting some ground-shattering research, being valedictorian of high school, being the prom king / queen are all experiences that would give someone that inner confidence you mention. But what if, we do not have such an experience or influential life style. What if we have not really ever found that confidence in ourselves. How would you recommend that we find that inner confidence to make ourselves more FIERCE?
