What It Is!
Thursdays on the GETFIERCE TRAINING page are all about challenging ourselves. These challenges are meant to build ourselves up, to feel good, to be strong and to grow! This week’s challenge is all about changing our habits. This week we’re focusing on our food; where we go to grocery shop, what we eat and how it’s grown.
This week’s challenge is to eat one food item grown locally each day. That’s right, only an item, per day. It’s all about getting into the practice of trying something new. The hope is that by finding new places to get your food you’ll begin to add more and more local foods into your diet.
Why Should I?
Here are some great reasons to give this challenge a shot. Eating locally is…
- Fresher (more nutrients)
- Typically have less environmental impact
- Preserve green space & farmland
- Food safety (less chance of contamination because you KNOW where it came from)
- Support local economy
- Promote variety and seasonal eating
Where Do I Go?
Duh, “There’s an app for that!” If you don’t know where to go to get food that’s grown locally you can download the FREE app from the NRDC on iTunes. It’s super easy to use. You enter your zip code and BAM they give you all the farmers markets, shops, farms that sell locally grown food in your area.
Give it a shot. You might just make a new friend in your local farmer!
