“What Are You Doing This For?”

ASK ME ANYTHING

I’m an open book. I’m always happy to share my story, my process, my challenges, really anything you can think of I’ll share honestly. Being asked this questions about training for Naturalmania 2017, “What are you doing this for?” Had me stop and take pause. “What the hell AM I doing this for?”

TAKE IT FROM THE TOP

There are a few major factors to consider here; until I was 22 I weighed nearly 200 lbs, I was brought up believing that we grow physically decrepit as we age and lastly I’m not willing to be basic. Combine all of these and you end up with me; a FIERCE woman always searching to be the best physical version of herself each and every year.

About 5 years ago (when I was 35) I began looking at athletes over 70 who had been training in their sport for nearly all of their lifetimes. Now please don’t take offense, these are my opinions and how I chose my path. To me, even  the most successful runners looked frail and older than their age as if they’d literally “weathered the storm” of all those miles. With joint and back pain, running was a sport that I decided wasn’t for me for the long haul, I used to take a pain relief medication but still did not feel ready to run.  Then I looked at something more gentle on the body and joints and that would be a challenge for me, swimming. Many who swam solely as their form of training had poor posturing and a majority had kyfosis (rounded backs), again not my ideal. I kept searching and when I looked at physique competitors I was astounded. Bodybuilding is a sport in which you get better at physically over time. The more time you have the more muscle mass you can gain. Being so mindful and specific of the food you must eat and what it does to your physique, the better you know your body and comfortable you get in your own skin. The confidence you have to present  on stage, perfecting your look and your body year over year… I was IN.

Two years ago when I competed for the first time I was doing it to see what my body could do and mostly to not look a fool on stage. To tell you the entire truth I was petrified and miserable  the entire time I trained. I was hungry, I was sore and worst of all I was a total b!#ch. Literally when anyone would ask how I was doing my auto-response was, “I’m sore and tired.” Trust that this wasn’t my finest moment.

The long story to the short question “Why are you doing this?” is that I’m doing this this year to prove that I can do it better than before and ENJOY THE PROCESS. Not everyone has a healthy body, I knew I needed to be grateful to challenge my physical capacity every day. I have to say that if this is my goal this go round, I’m winning! I’ve done this through joy and appreciation. It’s not as big a deal as it was last time, some say it’s because I’ve done  it before, but I know that it’s what I’m focused on. Gratitude and ease is what I was striving for and  it’s what I’ve gotten. (Well, except to my trainer I complain to him, but that’s when he makes  me lift extra heavy and I love him for that.)

REMEMBER WHY YOU STARTED

I say it in my classes and I remind myself of it come cardio time, I have legs that work, there are people who would give anything to have my able body. This thought keeps me in a space of gratitude for the body I have. It’s not easy by any means, shifting my mind or the physical work, but I do have to say that being IN JOY is a much better place to come from than the cranky B I was last time around.

SET YOUR SIGHTS

IMG_0985BE MINDFUL

I never really thought about what this SET YOUR SIGHT meant until I was thinking of a title for this post. It’s kind of perfect because unless we are mindful and deliberate with ALL we are doing we have no sights set. We awake, shower, dress, workout, eat, work…all just out of habit without any real vision for what we want the exact outcome to be. Why? Isn’t that odd? Why wouldn’t we wake get our minds clear, set expectations for the day and go about each moment deliberately focused on what our goals are for the day and broader yet for the year, our lives…wouldn’t that be awesome!? I think it would because then we’d get where we wanted quicker because there would be clear intention behind our actions. umm, yes please!

WHY I’M WRITING ABOUT THIS
I was thinking about my own training for my upcoming competition. I am wholly committed to my fitness. Everything I do physically is purely focused on the outcome of my show. So much energy goes into my workouts, my meditations, my meal prep…all the things I do are to get my body ready to get on stage, but JUST to be on stage, I’m getting on stage to win.

IT’S A LEARNING PROCESS
At the beginning of my training I wrote about how I’m most excited for the lessons I’d learn along the way. I had a big one when my coaches pushed my show date back. I had the April 1st set in my mind as when I would compete. I started training on December 7th, that’s 5 months…that’s enough time, well, that’s what I thought anyway. My coaches said I wasn’t ready, to them April 29th was more reasonable. I had a mini meltdown. I cried. I was so upset.  I didn’t want to push the date. I was doing all the “right” things and my body was changing, but not enough to win and that wasn’t my goal. I learned in that moment that I like for things to happen when I want them to happen, Yup, it’s TRUE! I had to accept that even though I’m doing all the right things that I need to trust the process. That’s a big lesson for me. I like to think in terms of fairness. If I’m lifting, doing all the cardio, eating crazy clean, drinking water, sweating it out then WHY will I not be ready when I want to? Ahh, young grasshopper…trust the process. I listened and accepted my later date with trust.

IMG_0838IT GETS BETTER
Last Thursday I looked at my trainer and said, “I want to win when I get on stage and I don’t think I will on the 29th.” He looked back at me and said, “You won’t win.” I wasn’t sad or disheartened…I didn’t even shed a tear (if you know me you know that’s BIG)! I knew he was right. I said, “I think I need to compete in the fall.” Literally his face lit up and he responded, “‘I’ve been waiting for you to say that.” I would like to add an exclamation point right there, but Derrick (my amazing trainer) doesn’t talk with anything exclaimed, but I do have to say his face LIT UP and he was as excited as I’ve ever seen him (which is still pretty stoic, but exciting for me nonetheless).

I know now that I can’t rush the process. WHOA. For me this is HUGE. I have no feelings of sadness, there is no doubt, I know it’s all working out and I have to keep up what I’m doing and continue on. I’m doing everything I’m supposed to, but this takes time and I have an intention, to WIN. I have never looked this good physically in my entire life, I’ve never been as fit and strong as I am right now. I feel AMAZING and I’m only getting better. For me right now this makes me so excited because I really have fallen in love with the process and not just because I’m getting abs for the first time in my life. I love feeling strong. I love the way I look, but more than anything I love how I feel. I have 8 more months to grow and to learn.

IMG_0956

It’s not about a number on the scale. This is just one measurement. I started this journey at 129. 9lbs down, but lots of muscle (& pride) gained!

YOUR TURN
There are many more lessons for me to learn on this journey, but I wanted to throw this one at you. Are you willing to remember your intention? What is your goal for your day? your week? Do you even have a bigger goal…like a year or five? Is it to pay your rent each month or do you want to make millions? Is every single thing you do in a day focused on getting you to that outcome? I want to invite you set one goal. Make your days about that. Stay focused. We have one life, My Friends, we might as well make it FIERCE.

If you’re interested in raising your fitness level or looking for a nutritional coach shoot me a line…I can help you #GETFIERCE

MAKE A MOVE FROM THE HEART.

LOVE is everywhere.PASSION

I’m a BIG believer that anything you do, to do it well, you have to do it with your whole heart, with passion and purpose…you’ve got to GET FIERCE.

To be where I am today I made a decision, I will never see 189 on the scale again. I didn’t say it wishy washy, it wasn’t a maybe, it was a MUST and that’s how the shift happened. It was not an option for me to fail. In 2000, that was enough to get me into a fit body. Since then my purpose has shifted. My goals now are to be in the best shape of my life, to learn all I can about fitness and teach others, to love myself, to be open and to give back. What started with a “I will never…” has turned into my life’s mission.

If there’s something inside of you that you’ve been wanting, been “waiting for the perfect time for” I have great news, there’s never A perfect time…there are LOADS of ’em and it’s the moment you fucking go for it…that’s when it’s perfect. Stop waiting. NOW is your time to make your dreams happen.

WHAT BETTER TIME THAN NOW?

LET’S #GETFIERCE TOGETHER!

#TBT to the Time I Competed in a Fitness Competition!

WERKBIKINIS & HEELS

This past weekend I competed in the WBFF (World Beauty Fitness & Fashion) Competition in the Bikini Division. For those of you who know me, you might think, WHAT? It’s kind of how I felt…but I set my mind to it and committed. Over the past 7 months I transformed not only my body, but my life. I’m not the same person as when I started, we never are when me decide to make a commitment to something BIG.

A NEW LEVEL OF FIERCE

Before this process I worked out every day and ate a very clean diet. Durning this process I had to take it to an entirely new level. I had to eat, sleep & breathe this competition for 210 days. I was lifting heavy, I completely shifted my diet and my workouts…it was INSANE and I felt like I was and I wanted to quit. While the physical results are easy to see what it did for me mentally was BEYOND my wildest imagination.THE DRESS

Every time I wanted to sleep in I had to remember what I was working for. When I wanted to hang out with friends I would have to do workouts with them instead of cocktails. Dinners out were a no go, it was food prep at home, but the biggest thing I learned is to talk to myself the way I talk to my students (sh!t is REAL GOOD!) SO many times in my workouts I had myself running through my head, “I CAN, I AM, I WILL” “When you think you Can’t you MUST!” (that one I took away from my Tony Robbins “Date with Destiny” last December). Remembering my own words kept me on the hook for not only finishing, but finishing STRONG.

I would never in my wildest dreams post a “butt” shot on my blog for the world to see. BUTT here it is. I’m proud of who I am and what I’ve accomplished.

IT’S ALL A LEARNING PROCESS

I had a HUGE learning moment this past Thursday night, two days before the show…a breakdown. I had a dress rehearsal with my coach’s team. I FLOPPED. I FROZE… Whatever you call it, I was anything, but FIERCE. Walking, posing, in all of it I looked like a train wreck…not in my physical body, but in my spirit, my confidence was shot. I cried the entire walk home (I’m sure the carb/water depletion didn’t help). I wanted to quit, there was NO way I was going out on stage presenting myself like that.  A few inspirational texts from my coach and a dear friend and I knew I had to pick up the pieces and get it together. I went to NYSC with our PR rep from SWERVE (another dear friend) by my side on Friday morning to find what I had last the night before and the rest is history, I found my confidence!

DGP_0072 Over 35sGAME DAY

From start to finish this day was AH-MAZING! I woke up and ran errands because I had so much nervous energy in my body! I was surrounded by amazing friends, “my bridesmaids” while I got my hair and makeup done, I remember taking Biotin for several months so that I would have my hair looking awesome for the competition, some of you may not know whats biotin, but basically is a supplement that helps with hair growth. The texts/emails/calls posts that let up to the evening show with thoughts of “good luck” and encouragement were EVERYTHING. I was so filled with love that I didn’t even need to competed…I felt complete. BUT OF COURSE I DID!

I competed in the 35+ bikini division and transformation division in which I qualified for the world show. I will NOT be going to Vegas for the World’s. My goal is complete. I did not set out on this journey to make this my life’s pursuit. I competed to learn how strong I am and that i did.

FIERCE POSETHE STATS

I started training January 17th at 117lbs 21% body fat..

On July 6th (pre depletion week, the week before competition)  I was 122.4 13.4% body fat

COMPETITION DAY, July 11th: 114.6 12.7% body fat!!!!!

Remember, it’s not what you GET it’s what you GIVE. You gotta GIVE in a FIERCE way and BELIEVE that you will GET more than you ever dreamed.

I LOVE YOU! NOW LET’S #GETFIERCE TOGETHER!

#TBT #StartedFromTheBottomNowWeHere

OLD #SelfieAIN’T NOTHING NEW ABOUT A SELFIE

Here it is. Another #TBT picture capturing the level of my unhealthy lifestyle. Just to note I’ve ALWAYS been the Queen of #Selfies even in 1999! I look at these photos now and feel so far from that place, but it wasn’t long ago that I would NEVER share my story let alone post a photo! It would bring tears to my eyes with even the remembrance that I was that heavy. I was ashamed, I was sad, I still carried that “I’m a fat girl” mentality even as a fit person. I remember my mentor and dear friend, Patricia Moreno, saying to me, “Your past is a gift and one day you’ll appreciate your story.” I remember my eyes welling up with tears and thinking to myself, “When is that EVER going to happen?” I couldn’t believe that was possible to FEEL like a fit person even in a completely fit body. I weight 125lbs I was working out 2x a day and eating healthfully, but my mind was that of my formerly chubbs self.

LET ME OUT

There was a day about 4 years ago when my parents were coming to the city and I had them bring my photo albums from college. We were looking at the photos and dying laughing! My mom kept saying, “You weren’t that big!” as we were seeing me grow larger and large in photo laughing harder and harder. I was like, “MOM…come on, I’m huge.” I realized that I WAS that person, but I’m NOT her now. I’m truly grateful for her, she taught me so much and I think it was that day that I set her free. I was done holding on to who I was and FINALY owned who I am and continue to grow to be.

WE ARE WHAT WE FOCUS ON

The thing that kept me from feeling “fit” is that I kept seeing my old story. I was focusing on NOT being that old story and even though I had a new body it was with the same mind, so to me it felt the same. It sounds mental, but it’s the truth. You’ve got to see the picture as it is, with no judgement and then decide where you want to go. I see myself today as I am. I’m super excited for where I’m going. I’ve raised my bar and I now know that with this shift I can inspire others to get to their dreams (bikini competition HERE I COME!)

MY DREAM

I wish for everyone to live in a body that they are proud of and that they have created with love. It’s simple, but I believe that if you live in a body that makes you feel strong you can go out into the world and do anything you dream possible. I want to light up the world with my energy and I’m inviting you to join me.

DREAM BIG and #GETFIERCE

EVERYONE NEEDS INFORMATION & INSPIRATION

GirlPower

Lauren, Vanessa and Me!

SURROUND YOURSELF

It’s important to surround yourself with people who are like minded, who have the same goals and those who lift you up.  I have a B.S. in Athletic Training. I’m a certified personal trainer. I have certs in TRX, Kettlebell Concepts, intenSati, Booiaka, 30/60/90. I have a degree from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, BUT I STILL NEED HELP TRAINING for my fitness ocmpetition!

FIND YOUR PEOPLE

I have the honor of being a SINbassador. SIN Workouts is Vanessa Martin’s brain child, she is a concierge fitness mogul and brings together like minded people (as well as endless other awesome fitness services). Through Vanessa and Universal circumstance, I was brought to Lauren Lelli. Lauren is a Pro Diva Bikini Model (seriously) and my new coach! I feel completely reenergized and ready to take my fitness to a new level.

GET FIERCE BY MYSELF

Yes, I have the scientific knowledge to train myself, BUT I have never trained for a fitness competition before. I don’t know the ropes. In reading all the rules of competition I realized, “#%*! I need help with this!” I don’t know how to pose, I need to be taught the ultimate way to train and eat to be my best. There are so many aspects where I’m blind…most importantly where to get a competition bikini and heels! When you set off on a new path the smartest thing to do is to get a guide and Lauren is mine. I’m SO grateful to have found her and can’t wait for all the awesomeness and crazy challenges to come.

GO FOR IT!

I was terrified to take on this goal of workout guide and even more so to share it with you, because that meant that I would actually have to follow through with it. I’m here to say, taking the leap is the biggest step. I’m in it now and I’m already on my way. I challenge you to think about what you want…what you REALLY want and go get it. Make a plan, find experts to help get you there and RUN.

This is OUR year and we’re making it happen TOGETHER! Check out my schedule for this week below (and my new BEFORE pic).
