“What Are You Doing This For?”

ASK ME ANYTHING

I’m an open book. I’m always happy to share my story, my process, my challenges, really anything you can think of I’ll share honestly. Being asked this questions about training for Naturalmania 2017, “What are you doing this for?” Had me stop and take pause. “What the hell AM I doing this for?”

TAKE IT FROM THE TOP

There are a few major factors to consider here; until I was 22 I weighed nearly 200 lbs, I was brought up believing that we grow physically decrepit as we age and lastly I’m not willing to be basic. Combine all of these and you end up with me; a FIERCE woman always searching to be the best physical version of herself each and every year.

About 5 years ago (when I was 35) I began looking at athletes over 70 who had been training in their sport for nearly all of their lifetimes. Now please don’t take offense, these are my opinions and how I chose my path. To me, even  the most successful runners looked frail and older than their age as if they’d literally “weathered the storm” of all those miles. With joint and back pain, running was a sport that I decided wasn’t for me for the long haul.  Then I looked at something more gentle on the body and joints and that would be a challenge for me, swimming. Many who swam solely as their form of training had poor posturing and a majority had kyfosis (rounded backs), again not my ideal. I kept searching and when I looked at physique competitors I was astounded. Bodybuilding is a sport in which you get better at physically over time. The more time you have the more muscle mass you can gain. Being so mindful and specific of the food you must eat and what it does to your physique, the better you know your body and comfortable you get in your own skin. The confidence you have to present  on stage, perfecting your look and your body year over year… I was IN.

Two years ago when I competed for the first time I was doing it to see what my body could do and mostly to not look a fool on stage. To tell you the entire truth I was petrified and miserable  the entire time I trained. I was hungry, I was sore and worst of all I was a total b!#ch. Literally when anyone would ask how I was doing my auto-response was, “I’m sore and tired.” Trust that this wasn’t my finest moment.

The long story to the short question “Why are you doing this?” is that I’m doing this this year to prove that I can do it better than before and ENJOY THE PROCESS. Not everyone has a healthy body, I knew I needed to be grateful to challenge my physical capacity every day. I have to say that if this is my goal this go round, I’m winning! I’ve done this through joy and appreciation. It’s not as big a deal as it was last time, some say it’s because I’ve done  it before, but I know that it’s what I’m focused on. Gratitude and ease is what I was striving for and  it’s what I’ve gotten. (Well, except to my trainer I complain to him, but that’s when he makes  me lift extra heavy and I love him for that.)

REMEMBER WHY YOU STARTED

I say it in my classes and I remind myself of it come cardio time, I have legs that work, there are people who would give anything to have my able body. This thought keeps me in a space of gratitude for the body I have. It’s not easy by any means, shifting my mind or the physical work, but I do have to say that being IN JOY is a much better place to come from than the cranky B I was last time around.

SET YOUR SIGHTS

IMG_0985BE MINDFUL

I never really thought about what this SET YOUR SIGHT meant until I was thinking of a title for this post. It’s kind of perfect because unless we are mindful and deliberate with ALL we are doing we have no sights set. We awake, shower, dress, workout, eat, work…all just out of habit without any real vision for what we want the exact outcome to be. Why? Isn’t that odd? Why wouldn’t we wake get our minds clear, set expectations for the day and go about each moment deliberately focused on what our goals are for the day and broader yet for the year, our lives…wouldn’t that be awesome!? I think it would because then we’d get where we wanted quicker because there would be clear intention behind our actions. umm, yes please!

WHY I’M WRITING ABOUT THIS
I was thinking about my own training for my upcoming competition. I am wholly committed to my fitness. Everything I do physically is purely focused on the outcome of my show. So much energy goes into my workouts, my meditations, my meal prep…all the things I do are to get my body ready to get on stage, but JUST to be on stage, I’m getting on stage to win.

IT’S A LEARNING PROCESS
At the beginning of my training I wrote about how I’m most excited for the lessons I’d learn along the way. I had a big one when my coaches pushed my show date back. I had the April 1st set in my mind as when I would compete. I started training on December 7th, that’s 5 months…that’s enough time, well, that’s what I thought anyway. My coaches said I wasn’t ready, to them April 29th was more reasonable. I had a mini meltdown. I cried. I was so upset.  I didn’t want to push the date. I was doing all the “right” things and my body was changing, but not enough to win and that wasn’t my goal. I learned in that moment that I like for things to happen when I want them to happen, Yup, it’s TRUE! I had to accept that even though I’m doing all the right things that I need to trust the process. That’s a big lesson for me. I like to think in terms of fairness. If I’m lifting, doing all the cardio, eating crazy clean, drinking water, sweating it out then WHY will I not be ready when I want to? Ahh, young grasshopper…trust the process. I listened and accepted my later date with trust.

IMG_0838IT GETS BETTER
Last Thursday I looked at my trainer and said, “I want to win when I get on stage and I don’t think I will on the 29th.” He looked back at me and said, “You won’t win.” I wasn’t sad or disheartened…I didn’t even shed a tear (if you know me you know that’s BIG)! I knew he was right. I said, “I think I need to compete in the fall.” Literally his face lit up and he responded, “‘I’ve been waiting for you to say that.” I would like to add an exclamation point right there, but Derrick (my amazing trainer) doesn’t talk with anything exclaimed, but I do have to say his face LIT UP and he was as excited as I’ve ever seen him (which is still pretty stoic, but exciting for me nonetheless).

I know now that I can’t rush the process. WHOA. For me this is HUGE. I have no feelings of sadness, there is no doubt, I know it’s all working out and I have to keep up what I’m doing and continue on. I’m doing everything I’m supposed to, but this takes time and I have an intention, to WIN. I have never looked this good physically in my entire life, I’ve never been as fit and strong as I am right now. I feel AMAZING and I’m only getting better. For me right now this makes me so excited because I really have fallen in love with the process and not just because I’m getting abs for the first time in my life. I love feeling strong. I love the way I look, but more than anything I love how I feel. I have 8 more months to grow and to learn.

IMG_0956

It’s not about a number on the scale. This is just one measurement. I started this journey at 129. 9lbs down, but lots of muscle (& pride) gained!

YOUR TURN
There are many more lessons for me to learn on this journey, but I wanted to throw this one at you. Are you willing to remember your intention? What is your goal for your day? your week? Do you even have a bigger goal…like a year or five? Is it to pay your rent each month or do you want to make millions? Is every single thing you do in a day focused on getting you to that outcome? I want to invite you set one goal. Make your days about that. Stay focused. We have one life, My Friends, we might as well make it FIERCE.

If you’re interested in raising your fitness level or looking for a nutritional coach shoot me a line…I can help you #GETFIERCE

MEDITATE WITH ME

This is a tradition that is thousands of years old that allows sound and vibration to flow through your body allowing restoreation to the body’s natural state of peace and ease. All you need to do is lay and be, the bowls will do the rest.

Please wear loose fitting clothing with no buttons or zippers. Make sure to drink water throughout the day in preparation. This class is open to all meditation levels. Comment below to set up a private group session or to bring the bowls to your corporation.

EACH BREAKdown IS A breakTHROUGH

img_0280WHEN NO REALLY MEANS YES

Perception is everything. I know that, but sometimes in the moment it’s challenging to make that connection. So here’s what happened to me recently and why I bring this up. I had my first practice session with my posing coach (posing coach = bad ass woman who teaches you to strut like a boss all while being feminine and how to stand best for my bod and the judges) on Thursday night. Donned in my super classy clear plastic heels I was strutting away feeling good because I had done this before. It’s always a bit nerve-wracking to work with someone new and have them critique you, but this gal is super cool so it was going fabulously. Throughout our hour together I was getting all good feedback. At the end of our session she says, “So when are you thinking (meaning show date)?” I reply, “April 1st or 8th” and her response, “I think 12 weeks.” This would put me at April 29th/May 6th, not that big of a deal you may think, but the result of her comment were my flowing tears. Crying is literally my version of a little kid stomping her feet. I was heartbroken. All I heard in my head was, “You’re not ready. You’re not good enough. This process will go on and on. You’ll never be ready.”

MY FIRST (OF MANY TO COME) LESSONS

I had to ask myself why I was reacting this way. I had a date set in my head, but I also have a goal. I’m not just showing up on stage this time, I’m competing to win. I had told my coach this and she’s holding me to my word. What does a date matter? There are shows all the time. I can and will win this. What I can’t do is rush the process. The crying was my way of wanting it to work, fearing that I’m not or never will be winning material. Breathing, meditating, spending real time thinking on this subject I know that’s not the case. I must have patience through this. I must have faith and trust the process. I must believe and know that everything is all working out perfectly and in divine time. Who knows where the show will be, who will be there, all I have to know is that it will be perfect for me and that I will win.

LOOKING BACK ISN’T ALL BAD

I have come so far in only 10 weeks of training. I see and feel how my body has shifted. I have to look back to appreciate my journey. I’ve seen my progress in photos and know where I have to go. I’m tweaking my diet, my workouts, my sleep to get the best results possible. I am stronger than I have ever been in my entire life and am SO grateful for all of the support I have received. Mainly I’m grateful for my ability to see all the good in each situation. Probably the best thing that came out of the last show was learning how hard it could be and know that I made it that way. This go round, YES it’s challenging, but I don’t have to make it a struggle or complain every step of the way. I’ve done that and it’s NO FUN. I appreciate my body, my health all of the new (crazy) people I’ve met along the way and I truly wouldn’t change a thing. Look how great this is! And now I get to do it for longer!

DON’T F-ING SETTLE

Here’s the real thing, if I rushed the process I wouldn’t get what I really wanted in the first place, I’d be settling for good enough. I want magic in all areas of my life; career, love, health, wealth…all of it! Sometimes magic takes a little extra time just like my show. There’s no time table on life. All I have to do is believe is coming and know I’m giving my BEST (in joy and gratitude) every single day.

This is only the beginning…

ARE YOU A BODY BUILDER?

img_0070MY MOST FAVORITE QUESTION

Training for this bikini contest has people asking me SO many crazy questions and I love every single one. I’m more than happy to answer any and all inquiries. Recently I was with a friend who was introducing me and said, “This is my teacher, she’s a body builder!” I giggled because I’ve never really used that terminology for my training. Then I began to think about it and I realized, “YES! I AM a bodybuilder!” And so is every single person on this earth.

I choose to lift heavy weights to build muscle and to get stronger every day. I meditate daily to remember who I am and where I came from, to keep calm. I do hot yoga to stay flexible and open. And cardio, well, that’s my life. I have to get my own heart pumping (weight training does that too), but cardio is what gives me life through music and sweating with you.

WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU?

You’re a body builder too! We are all growing everyday, but how is what we each determine. Are you  becoming better, stronger, fitter, faster? What is YOUR focus? I believe that we should each be outstanding at what we love. YOU don’t need to get on stage to flex. You can be an author, an actor, a teacher a lawyer, that’s your call. I do believe that with a strong healthy body our passions are better served and if we’re lucky we’ll live a little bit longer and stronger to do what we love.

MOVE IN JOY

I competed in 2015 and it was the biggest struggle for me. I forced myself to be a “body builder” and suffered (and complained) the entire time. This go-round I’m doing it IN JOY. I remind myself daily that how grateful I am to have a healthy body, that I have food to eat and water to drink. I am blessed. We have one body to live in and I choose to make mine the best it can be, challenging it every day.
START NOW
It’s never too late for a new beginning. It doesn’t need to be a Monday, or a new year or the 1st of the month. Lucky you though, today is Monday, it’s the year of the rooster and if you’re the 1st of the month kind of person, well then Wednesday is your day! Just do it…you’re FIERCE!

MAKE A CHOICE

IMG_1628START A NEW
The new year is a “fresh start” for so many. There is an energetic shift when so many people are focused on the belief that anything is possible. I love and fully appreciate this, but I also know that we have the gift of  potential possibility every single day. I want to know what you are committed to this new year. Remember it starts with just one thought.
BE FIERCE.
When you choose what you want make it BIG. It’s your time to choose, so why temper your dream…shoot for the moon! Make it scary as hell, those are the BEST ones. A vision that you know you can achieve is great, but what will you learn from the process of getting there? If you pick something that you’re unsure of how you will make it happen, that you’re slightly terrified of, but that you want and excites you…THAT is the ONE!
MINE.
You know what this first quarter of this year is for me, the NPC Bikini Competition. Yes, I’ve done it before, but it doesn’t make it any easier. I also now know what it entails to get up on that stage and it still scares the $#!+ out of me. It’s right. I also know that I will take away great lessons and am committed to this journey through a lens of gratitude.
SHARING IS CARING.
Tell as many people as you can about your goals. Create a support team and share with those who will cheer you on rather then tempt you away from your dream. Get an accountability partner that will keep you in check. Share what your plan is for 2017 in the comment section! I want know what you’re up to.
12 WEEKS OUT!
I’ll be posting my weekly photos leading up to the competition (April 1st)…scroll down to see my progress.

Let’s make this our best year yet TOGETHER! #GETFIERCE.

NEW YEAR! YOU READY?

DGP_9828FIT FIERCE MIND & BOD
I’ve been getting loads of questions about my competition training. The #1 question I’m getting is “What’s your diet?” The number one thing I’m focused on right now is getting enough protein in my diet to build muscle, I also read that an important research proves that zinc helps so I’m concentrating on that right now. My calories are between 1300-1400 each day. I’m in the building phase right now and clean eating is key.
THE ISSUE
Over years of coaching clients on nutrition the number of people who are not only over eating, but over carb-ing is overwhelming. Getting your macros in line is key. Macros are the large nutrient groups; proteins, fats and carbs. There is SO much sugar in our U.S. diet and sugars are carbs. The sugar coupled with your morning bagel, pasta dinner, side of rice etc. add up to excess weight and inflammation in the body.
FIX IT
I highly recommend tracking your food. It will make you aware of what and how much food you’re putting in your body. I use the app MyFitnessPal. MFP allows you to enter your food and tells you what your countdown to your macro goal is as you enter food throughout the day. The first day I started a couple of years ago I was over my sugar goal for the day by 10AM! Even being so well versed in nutrition my actions weren’t in line with my goals. As with anything, you have to stay committed and actually log your food to keep you Getting FIERCE!
MY GOALS
Right now I’m eating 55% protein, 25% carbohydrates and 20% fat. For my caloric intake it equates to 199g protein, 90g carbs and 32g fat. You can set your goals in MyFitnessPal and educate yourself on what you’re actually eating each day and if it’s eating for your goals. Also, if you join MFP, be sure to follow me. DFierce1502 is my user name! You know it’s always good to have an accountability partner and we can help each other meet our goals.

15725522_10211781732681471_1094547027_oMEDITATE WITH ME

Fridays in the month of January I’ll be hosting small group (6 person) 60 minute Tibetan Healing Bowls meditation.

Let’s make this our best year yet TOGETHER! #GETFIERCE.
