It’s All About the Heart

Day Four

So for the past 3 posts I’ve been talking about the first 3 Chakras. To backpedal and learn a little bit about the background you can check out the past three chakra posts; The Root, The Saccral and The Solar Plexus. Today we’re getting down to the heart of the matter, as Don Henly says, and taking a look at the fourth chakra, The Heart or Anahata as it’s called in Sanskrit meaning “sound vibration of the heart”

Anahata or The Heart Chakra

The Heart Chakra is located near the center of the breast bone. The heart chakra is centered around complex emotions and relationships with others. Physically Anahata governs circulation and is associated with the heart, thymus gland, lower lung. Emotionally Anahata governs unconditional love for oneself and others. Mentally the fourth chakra governs passion, and spirituality. A balanced heart chakra is expressed in self acceptance, the acceptance of others and the ability to follow your own direction in life.

The Color of Your Heart (Chakra)

The color associated with the heart chakra is Green. Green symbolizes harmony, creativity, health, abundance and nature. It is the combining of yellow (soul) and blue (spirit). Green, nature’s color, offers new energy and revitalizes tired nerves.

Get Stoned

All the green stones – emerald, green tourmaline, malachite, jade, chrysoprase, dipotase, peridot, aventurine, moss agate, green jasper – are used with the heart chakra. Though green is the primary color used with the heart chakra, it’s also said that pink stones (such as rose quartz or rhodonite) can be used if more softness, affection and love seem to be needed in working with the heart chakra.

Oil ‘Er Up
One of the most well known of the fourth chakra essentials oils is Rose oil, a heart-healer commonly used to combat depression. It is said that Rose oil will increase positive thoughts, a sense of spiritualism and feelings of hope and happiness (sounds good!)
A Mantra From “The Man”
Deepak Chopra is totally “The Man” when it comes to spirituality, for me at least…or one of the “men” should I say. Deepak, and many others, recommend the YUM mantra for healing the heart.
To perform this exercise you begin by sitting in a comfortable position, closing your eyes and envisioning a green light surrounding you heart chakra. Deeply breathing in and exhaling letting go of any thoughts of the past. As you deeply breath focusing on the green light filling and surrounding your heart with pure love and as you exhale saying or chanting the word yum, the healing sound that resinates with the heart chakra.
Believe me…I know it sounds a little bananas. I thought so the first time I sat to meditate alone (or do any type of short mantra), but try it. You just might be like Mikey and like it. I feel peaceful and totally relaxed after I meditate…just give it a shot…this one’s pretty simple and will only take a couple of minutes.

Chakra Chan Chakra Chan..

Energy Power! (Like a Care Bear Stare!)

I wrote last week about taking back my POWER and today I’m talking to you about the chakra that deals with just that. If you haven’t been reading the past couple of days you can read about the Root Chakra and the Sacral Chakra, but now it’s the Solar Plexus that we’re going to be learning about. A little catch up if you’re reading for the first time today.

Manipura or The Solar Plexus Chakra

The color of Manipura is yellow. The key issues governed by Manipura are personal power, fear, anxiety, opinion-formation, introversion, and transition from simple or base emotions to complex. Physically, the 3rd Chakra is located directly above your navel and governs digestion while mentally it governs personal power, emotionally it manages expansiveness, and spiritually, all matters of growth.

Balancing Act

When your 3rd Chakra is balanced you trust yourself and take full responsibility for your life. You feel a strong sense of self worth and positive self value. A balanced Solar Plexus Chakra ensures your personal freedom to direct your spirit to realize your highest potential. You are the creator of your reality and manifest easily all that you desire into the physical world.

An 3rd Chakra that is unbalanced can manifest itself an inability to take responsibility for yourself and your life experiences. You may lack self control, and blame and criticize others for your problems.

Body Represented

The third chakra correlates to in the body to the upper abdomen, rib cage, lower thoracic to 2nd lumbar, pancreas, liver, spleen, kidney, adrenals, small intestines, stomach

Healing Aromas and Essential Oils

For nourishing and balancing the 7 Major chakras, include: Lavender and the Holy Oils – Frankincense, Myrrh, Sandalwood and Spikenard. And specifically for the 3rd Chakra you can inhale a pure essential oil or blend that is sweet, sour, earthy, woody, and restorative. Aromas like Sandalwood, Myrrh, Atlas Cedarwood, Ylang Ylang, Petitgrain, Vetiver, Lemon, Patchouli and Helichrysum.

Rock IT! (crystals too)

For chakra balancing your 3rd chakra use Emerald, Citrine, Tiger’s Eye, Moss Agate

Meditation and Blessing

Sit quietly and speak or think “I am a powerful creator of my reality and I love it.” Breathe out any residual resistance you may feel to living and expressing your truth. Affirm once more, “I love and honor myself and all of life.”

Stepping It Up a Level

This is HOT!

Today we’re talking about Swadhisthana…WHAT? This is the 2nd chakra or the sacral chakra Here’s a little Recap from yesterday. A chakra is an  energy force that is associated with physical and spiritual aspects of the body. This is NOT tangible, but is said to have great effect on our chi or life force. Keeping the balance between our 7 chakras is key to a balanced life. While all chakras are important and need to be balanced and flowing…THIS one is HOT. The 2nd chakra is where we find our masculine/feminine balance and our passion.

Give It To Me!

Swadhisthana or The Sacral (Second) Chakra: This space is located at the base of the genital organs and represents the ovaries or the testes (feminine or masculine energy) and the hormones that dictate the reproductive cycle. The second is also called the sex chakra because it is thought that sexual energy originates from this area. This is not only a sexual chakra, but the base of all creativity.

When this chakra is blocked a person can seem dull and lifeless (we don’t want THAT!) A blocked Swadhisthana can cut us off from our sense of sexuality and block us from our emotions. Alternatively if this chakra is “too” open we can let our emotions dictate all of our actions creating an overall unbalanced system. The key is finding the balance.

The sexual chakra is represented by the color orange and this color can stimulate the respiratory and nervous systems and bring joy, making it useful for depression or melancholy (seems like people from the Netherlands should be SUPER cheerful, right?) The sacral chakra is also related to the adrenal glands, so orange can help to balance adrenal depletion or exhaustion resulting from chronic stress or overwork.

Below are some tools for creating balance in the second chakra and thus in your body and life…check ’em out.

  • Aromatherapy: Rose, Patchouli and Helichrysum
  • Essential Oils: Lavander, Frankincense, Myrrh, Sandalwood and Spikenard
  • Crystals and Gems: Rose Quartz, Carnelian, Coral and Agate
  • Focus: Visualize a rose pink colored light pulsing with energy in the second chakra region. This helps to create a procreative life force energy that is strong and passionate.
  • Meditation and Mantra: Focus on your 2nd chakra space and allow images to naturally surface and melt away blockages while mentally repeating “I love and honor myself and all life” and deeply breathing and exhaling fully.

You’re Grounded!

Not Like H.S., Kids. This is a GOOD Thing!

Oye, I can’ tell you how often I was grounded in high school. Grounding to me conjures up thoughts of missing out on good times; parties, sleep overs, school dances…NO FUN! This is not the grounding I’m writing about today, this grounding is much different.

 

Schakra Smackra!

Chakras are an energy concept which is based in Hinduism and Buddhism and utilized in tantric and yoga practices. Chakras are “centers” in the body where energy can collect and flow through. There are seven chakras that correspond to vital points in the physical body, but are understood as part of the spiritual body (intangible). Below is all you need to know about the 1st chakra, the root chakra. There are the seven chakra centers of the body which I will fill you in on in the next six posts.

The Root Cause

The 1st Chakra (it goes bottom up), the Root Chakra, represents our foundation and is all about feeling grounded and secure. Here’s the quick skinny on what you need to know about healing your Root Chakra:

Muladhara or The Root Chakra: The Root Chakra is represented by a lotus flower and is located at the base of the spine in the coccygeal region and is said to relate to the gonads and responsible for the “fight or flight” response.

Muladhara is responsible for our instinct, security, survival and basic human potentiality. Physically, Muladhara governs sexuality, mentally it governs stability and emotionally it governs sensuality. Spiritually the root chakra governs a sense of security. Muladhara also  has a relation to the sense of smell.

Healing Exercises:

  • Stomping your bare feet on the ground. Remember, the Root Chakra is all about feeling “grounded.”
  • Bridge Pose is another good yoga pose to try out (see above image).

Healing Foods:

  • Red colored foods (apples and beets)
  • Hot spices (Red cayenne peppers and Tabasco sauce)
  • Vegetables from the ground (potatoes and carrots)
  • Animal proteins (red meat and eggs)

Now go turn on some tunes, jump around barefoot, eat some beets and get grounded!
