BEST LIFE EVER!2/3s to GO!

2/3s to what? Well, I plan on being 105 years old, so I’m 1/3 of the way through my life (or so I have planned). I think about all the time I have left and I get REALLY excited! SO MUCH more to do…to experience. I want to be my BEST for the next 70 years, so I’m taking it to the nest level!

NOW I’m Cookin’ With Gas

In ELEVEN days I’m turning 35! I have ELEVEN “things” that I’m adding in that ,I feel, make ME a better person. I’m sharing one with YOU each day. Today is a really good one, for me…

#1 I will be making (most of) my meals at home. (75% is the #)

WHY:

  1. LOVE: I love to cook, it relaxes me and makes me feel accomplished, like I’ve given myself a very special gift. I have a crazy schedule, but it is actually conducive to being able to cook for myself IF (GIANT IF) I make time.
  2. KNOWING: I’ll know exactly what’s in the food I’m putting into my body. Even when we eat out and order “healthfully” we are not in control of what goes into our food. This way I will ensure that all that goes into what I eat is GOOD for me, no stray butter from the grill or extra sodium in my food!
  3. VEG/HEALTH: I tend to use only veggies when I cook for myself. It’s easy and there’s very little “mess”. I can chop everything on Sunday and use it in a variety of ways throughout the week. Mostly veggie meals equals not only a much lower calorie meals, but also much healthier (or how I do it, anyway…no tempura here!)
  4. $$$: I live in NYC and it’s EASY to get healthy food on the go. I get a green juice in the morning (which I will continue to do), but there’s Whole Foods, organic markets, vegan and veggie restaurants on nearly every corner. So, not only does it get easy to eat out, but it also get expensive! Then when I’m in there I tend to grab a “little something extra”. Not no’ mo’! Keepin’ in at home!

DAY 1 and DONE. 75% of my meals will be prepped and eaten at home. How do you feel about this? Is this doable for you? What percentage of your meals do you currently make at home and would you be game to upping that number to? Let me know!

PS – I LOVE my birthday. I love attention and gifts and phone calls and messages…duh, I’m a fitness instructor, I love being the center of attention! I want to FEEL my best on this day and every day going forward. 105 HERE I COME, lookin’ and feelin’ FIERCER than ever! WE ARE FIERCE!

You Hot? Eat Cool!

A Lil’ Something Different

Summer’s here, and thanks to “global warming” it feels crazy hot in NYC and all over the country. An ancient form of healing, Aryuvedic medicine, can help keep you cool during these hot summer months. Ayurveda emphasizes re-establishing balance in the body through diet, lifestyle, exercise, and body cleansing, and on the health of the mind, body, and spirit. This ancient form of healing contains secrets to staying cool when the temperature is reaching record highs.  Summer is fire or Pitta season in Aryuveda, and when you learn what to eat and how to act to balance this element, you will feel cooler and more comfortable all season.

Cool Foods

Pitta is made of fire and water. During summer season you can reduce Pitta heat within your own body by eating a diet of cooling foods. The best foods to keep you cool during summer are watermelon, cucumber, mint, coconut, summer squash, fennel, cilantro, and aloe vera. Makes sense, right? Eating foods that are grown in the season and that will keep you cool. It’s best to avoid spicy, salty, acidic and greasy foods during summer as they will increase the heat in your body and make you feel hotter.

Below are some basic Aryuvedic guidelines to help you keep cool this summer season!

  • Eat more foods that are Sweet, Bitter, Astringent / Cold, Heavy, Oily: such as salads, smoothies, fresh fruit.
  • Eat less foods that are Spicy, Sour, Salty, Hot, Light, Dry: such as spicy foods, hot beverages.
  • Choose fresh ripe berries, melons, apples, apricots, grapes, peaches, pears, pomegranates and ripe plums.
  • Favor asparagus, bell peppers, broccoli, cabbage, celery, cilantro, leafy greens, seaweed, snow peas, and summer squash.
  • Sip cool or room temperature water with cucumber slices or drink coconut water to keep cool and hydrated.
  • Drink herbal teas such as mint, hibiscus, dandelion and chicory.

I’m Doin’ ME!

You kids know that I rarely promote me on here. I go typically go as far as giving my opinion on what I like, what I do, what my goals are and share openly. Today I’m straight pimpin’ ME! It’s Not Thursday, BUT It’s Time For A Challenge!

It’s TIME To Bloom

So April showers bring May flowers and now it’s time for me, well, all of us, to grow to our fullest. I thought on this May 1st it would be fun to do a challenge for the month. With Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer, only 26 days away, I thought what a great time to raise my bar.

My goal is to feel AMAZING…a HOT TAMALE! I’m committed to eating whole healthy foods, no cheating! I have LOADS of excuses, “I’ve worked out 4 times today”, “I haven’t eaten all day”, “I’m tired I deserve it”…NO MORE! Today starts the truth. Small, protein dense meals, 5 times a day, no eating after 8pm and no complex carbohydrates (i.e. bread, pasta, rice, oats etc.).

I’ve shopped, chopped my veggies and I’m ready to go…actually, I’m already going. I feel better already and I’m really excited for this game. I’m taking it to the next level and really excited. I’m sure I’ll have days that are challenging (I mean really, this is Day 1, how could I NOT be excited?).

Drinkin’ Some Weed

It’s Not What You May Think…

About a year ago I started drinking dandelion root tea. I love this stuff. It’s grounding and has a really earthy (sounds corny, but it’s a really nice flavor) taste. I have a cup a day and am totally in love.

Why Should I…or You?

Dandelion root is one of the safest and most popular herbal remedies. It’s said to strengthen the entire body, especially the liver and gallbladder, where it promotes the flow of bile, reduces inflammation of the bile duct, due to its taraxacin. Dandelion root reduces liver swelling and jaundice, and it helps indigestion caused by insufficient bile. Don’t use it with irritable stomach or bowel, or if you have an acute inflammation.

The modern French name for this plant is pissenlit (lit means bed) because the root and leaf tea act on the kidneys as a gentle diuretic, improving the way they cleanse the blood and recycle nutrients (aka don’t drink this too close to bedtime, I do 3PM as the latest in the day that I’ll enjoy). Unlike pharmaceuticals diuretics, this doesn’t leach potassium from the body. Improved general health and clear skin result from improved kidney function.

Dandelions are also good for the bladder, spleen, pancreas, stomach and intestines. It’s recommended for stressed-out, internally sluggish, and sedentary people. Anyone who’s a victim of excessive fat, white flour, and concentrated sweeteners could benefit from a daily cup of dandelion tea.

Cheaper & Healthier…Seems Like a No-Brainer!

The Easy Way Out!

So, it’s VERY convenient, especially in NYC to pop into a restaurant and grab lunch or dinner on the go, but do you REALLY know what’s going into your food? I’ll answer that for you….Nope! The only way to know definitively what’s in it is to buy and prepare it yourself.

Not only will you know exactly what is going into your food, but it’s also a sense of pride and accomplishment that goes into your meal and your bod.  Sundays are a great time for prepping your food for the week and for grocery shopping, but if you don’t have the time, like my high school soccer coach, Jackson Foster, use to say, “Follow the K.I.S.S. method, Keep It Simple, Stupid”. It’s a great way to think about cooking. It doesn’t need to be crazy complicated it can be easy to cook for you and your family.

But How?

Take some time to go to the grocery store and get a whole bunch of your favorite veggies. On Sunday night (or Monday if that’s more your style) take time to chop ‘em all up so they’re ready for you to use throught the week. Store them in the Tupperware, best if it’s glass, in the ‘fridge. You can use them to bring to work for a salad. The next night take some veggies and a chicken breast or your favorite protein and make a stir-fry with some brown rice. The next day you can add some black beans and a whole wheat pita and you can have a burrito. You can use the same ingredients all week long adding in additional things, swapping ingredients out to make entirely new meals! K.I.S.S. (But now I’m changin’ the last ‘S’ to Smarty!)

Be Proud

Not only will you know for sure what’s in your food, but you get to add that extra element…Vitamin L…LOVE! If you like, cook with music and dance a lil around the kitchen. You’ll burn some extra calories and have some fun too! It’s my favorite way to do it!

You’re Not Only Getting Older…

You’re Getting BETTER! 

In out culture, age is not always as respected as it should be. Age is defined by the years we’ve lived, but in so many ways we can change the way the years affect our bodies and our minds.

By taking an active role in our own health we can help to determine our own age. By eating right and working out regularly we can keep our bodies  alive and feeling young!

Elle “The Body” McPhearson is gracing the cover of Fitness Magazine this month. McPhearson is nearly 50 years old and still rockin’ her bod in a hot gold swimsuit on the cover, but more importantly she treats her fitness as part of her life, not just to look hot, but to FEEL hot.

It Works As Long As You Do

The modern day founder of the fitness industry, Jack LeLanne, lived to age 96. He truly was living up until the day he died working out and eating a mainly vegetarian diet. To the right is a picture of the namesake of the Jumping Jack at age 71! These photos speak for themselves.

Give Yourself the Gift of Life

Treat everything you put into your body as a gift. It’s true, we are what we eat, so respect yourself with your food. Take time each day to move your body. Check out Jack’s TV show. It’s simple, times haven’t changed very much. Yes, there are new technologies, but really all you need to do is move. Stick with the motto, “If you don’t use it you lose it.”  So keep at it, my FIERCE Friends! I wanna see pictures of you at age 50 in your gold suits and at 70 flexing away!
