“What Are You Doing This For?”

ASK ME ANYTHING

I’m an open book. I’m always happy to share my story, my process, my challenges, really anything you can think of I’ll share honestly. Being asked this questions about training for Naturalmania 2017, “What are you doing this for?” Had me stop and take pause. “What the hell AM I doing this for?”

TAKE IT FROM THE TOP

There are a few major factors to consider here; until I was 22 I weighed nearly 200 lbs, I was brought up believing that we grow physically decrepit as we age and lastly I’m not willing to be basic. Combine all of these and you end up with me; a FIERCE woman always searching to be the best physical version of herself each and every year.

About 5 years ago (when I was 35) I began looking at athletes over 70 who had been training in their sport for nearly all of their lifetimes. Now please don’t take offense, these are my opinions and how I chose my path. To me, even  the most successful runners looked frail and older than their age as if they’d literally “weathered the storm” of all those miles. With joint and back pain, running was a sport that I decided wasn’t for me for the long haul, I used to take a pain relief medication but still did not feel ready to run.  Then I looked at something more gentle on the body and joints and that would be a challenge for me, swimming. Many who swam solely as their form of training had poor posturing and a majority had kyfosis (rounded backs), again not my ideal. I kept searching and when I looked at physique competitors I was astounded. Bodybuilding is a sport in which you get better at physically over time. The more time you have the more muscle mass you can gain. Being so mindful and specific of the food you must eat and what it does to your physique, the better you know your body and comfortable you get in your own skin. The confidence you have to present  on stage, perfecting your look and your body year over year… I was IN.

Two years ago when I competed for the first time I was doing it to see what my body could do and mostly to not look a fool on stage. To tell you the entire truth I was petrified and miserable  the entire time I trained. I was hungry, I was sore and worst of all I was a total b!#ch. Literally when anyone would ask how I was doing my auto-response was, “I’m sore and tired.” Trust that this wasn’t my finest moment.

The long story to the short question “Why are you doing this?” is that I’m doing this this year to prove that I can do it better than before and ENJOY THE PROCESS. Not everyone has a healthy body, I knew I needed to be grateful to challenge my physical capacity every day. I have to say that if this is my goal this go round, I’m winning! I’ve done this through joy and appreciation. It’s not as big a deal as it was last time, some say it’s because I’ve done  it before, but I know that it’s what I’m focused on. Gratitude and ease is what I was striving for and  it’s what I’ve gotten. (Well, except to my trainer I complain to him, but that’s when he makes  me lift extra heavy and I love him for that.)

REMEMBER WHY YOU STARTED

I say it in my classes and I remind myself of it come cardio time, I have legs that work, there are people who would give anything to have my able body. This thought keeps me in a space of gratitude for the body I have. It’s not easy by any means, shifting my mind or the physical work, but I do have to say that being IN JOY is a much better place to come from than the cranky B I was last time around.

SET YOUR SIGHTS

IMG_0985BE MINDFUL

I never really thought about what this SET YOUR SIGHT meant until I was thinking of a title for this post. It’s kind of perfect because unless we are mindful and deliberate with ALL we are doing we have no sights set. We awake, shower, dress, workout, eat, work…all just out of habit without any real vision for what we want the exact outcome to be. Why? Isn’t that odd? Why wouldn’t we wake get our minds clear, set expectations for the day and go about each moment deliberately focused on what our goals are for the day and broader yet for the year, our lives…wouldn’t that be awesome!? I think it would because then we’d get where we wanted quicker because there would be clear intention behind our actions. umm, yes please!

WHY I’M WRITING ABOUT THIS
I was thinking about my own training for my upcoming competition. I am wholly committed to my fitness. Everything I do physically is purely focused on the outcome of my show. So much energy goes into my workouts, my meditations, my meal prep…all the things I do are to get my body ready to get on stage, but JUST to be on stage, I’m getting on stage to win.

IT’S A LEARNING PROCESS
At the beginning of my training I wrote about how I’m most excited for the lessons I’d learn along the way. I had a big one when my coaches pushed my show date back. I had the April 1st set in my mind as when I would compete. I started training on December 7th, that’s 5 months…that’s enough time, well, that’s what I thought anyway. My coaches said I wasn’t ready, to them April 29th was more reasonable. I had a mini meltdown. I cried. I was so upset.  I didn’t want to push the date. I was doing all the “right” things and my body was changing, but not enough to win and that wasn’t my goal. I learned in that moment that I like for things to happen when I want them to happen, Yup, it’s TRUE! I had to accept that even though I’m doing all the right things that I need to trust the process. That’s a big lesson for me. I like to think in terms of fairness. If I’m lifting, doing all the cardio, eating crazy clean, drinking water, sweating it out then WHY will I not be ready when I want to? Ahh, young grasshopper…trust the process. I listened and accepted my later date with trust.

IMG_0838IT GETS BETTER
Last Thursday I looked at my trainer and said, “I want to win when I get on stage and I don’t think I will on the 29th.” He looked back at me and said, “You won’t win.” I wasn’t sad or disheartened…I didn’t even shed a tear (if you know me you know that’s BIG)! I knew he was right. I said, “I think I need to compete in the fall.” Literally his face lit up and he responded, “‘I’ve been waiting for you to say that.” I would like to add an exclamation point right there, but Derrick (my amazing trainer) doesn’t talk with anything exclaimed, but I do have to say his face LIT UP and he was as excited as I’ve ever seen him (which is still pretty stoic, but exciting for me nonetheless).

I know now that I can’t rush the process. WHOA. For me this is HUGE. I have no feelings of sadness, there is no doubt, I know it’s all working out and I have to keep up what I’m doing and continue on. I’m doing everything I’m supposed to, but this takes time and I have an intention, to WIN. I have never looked this good physically in my entire life, I’ve never been as fit and strong as I am right now. I feel AMAZING and I’m only getting better. For me right now this makes me so excited because I really have fallen in love with the process and not just because I’m getting abs for the first time in my life. I love feeling strong. I love the way I look, but more than anything I love how I feel. I have 8 more months to grow and to learn.

It’s not about a number on the scale. This is just one measurement. I started this journey at 129. 9lbs down, but lots of muscle (& pride) gained!

YOUR TURN
There are many more lessons for me to learn on this journey, but I wanted to throw this one at you. Are you willing to remember your intention? What is your goal for your day? your week? Do you even have a bigger goal…like a year or five? Is it to pay your rent each month or do you want to make millions? Is every single thing you do in a day focused on getting you to that outcome? I want to invite you set one goal. Make your days about that. Stay focused. We have one life, My Friends, we might as well make it FIERCE.

If you’re interested in raising your fitness level or looking for a nutritional coach shoot me a line…I can help you #GETFIERCE

YOU ARE FIERCE…make your move!

You Have NO Idea…

Birthday Ride 2015It’s MY Birthday!

Today is my 37th birthday and I feel like the Grinch. Not the crankypants one, the one at the end of the story who’s small heart grows 3 sizes! I’m overwhelmed by the love I feel today. “You have NO idea” how grateful I feel. In this age of social media when we get distracted by what’s happening online instead of being present in the moment…today I find it a blessing to connect with loved ones and all of the “blasts from the past” I’ve received messages from.

Live Your Dream

Sometimes I feel like I’m dreaming my life, it’s SO great! I was telling my friend yesterday that when I was little I would watch (and mimic) Gilad, Jane Fonda, Richard Simmons and dream of being them. His response was, “You kind of are.” I realized…I kinda am. I want to help as many people as possible to be their best. Year after year I set my bar higher and higher to be better and stronger not only for me, but as an example for others. I’m real, I know this sh!t can be challenging sometimes, but that’s what makes it awesome. When you get through the crappy, really hard parts and realize, “Damn I’m strong!” That’s what GETting FIERCE is all about.

HEARTLove Now

I can’t tell you what a great birthday weekend it’s been. Yesterday I celebrated with 4 workouts, 2 of my own and 2 I taught. After my final class I was brought a chia pudding with a candle (SWERVEfounders you know me so well) and I teared up. In that moment I realized that there’s not ONE particular special someone in my life at this moment there are LOADS of special someones. I have so much love around me I feel humbled, honored and overjoyed to serve you. My tears were me realizing just how grateful I am for what I do and for all of the wonderful people around me!

XXX

It is a triple x of love and kisses. I wasgoing to just write a thanks for the birthday wishes post on Facebook, but in true “Dyan Form” I have lots to say that would be too much for a single post. I want to thank everyone who has been a part of my world in the past for getting me where I need to be. Those who have encouraged me, told me no, broken my heart, picked me up, told me I could when I thought I couldn’t. All of you have helped me become who I am today.

No matter where you are in your life now, remember it’s not forever. It can all shift in a moment and it starts with a single thought. Make it BIG, make it FIERCE. Make it Happen! It’s your birthday when you choose a new beginning. I’m gifting you on my birthday to make it YOURS as well. Live YOUR DREAM!

I Wanna See You This Week!
