Cool as a Cuke, HUH? Here’s Why…10 Benefits of the CUCUMBER

I know, I’m Greek and we do love a cuke. A Fo’ REAL Greek salad (like if you got one in Greece) is only cucumbers, tomatoes, feta, olive oil and maybe some fresh herbs sprinkled a top. I add cucumber to my AM green juice to “smooth” out the taste, but I always thought of it as “just a filler” with little health benefit… WRONG! Below are 10 benefits of using cukes in your diet and in your life!

  1. Vitamin B – Cukes contain loads of Vitamin B which helps maintain your nerve and red blood cells health. Vit B is also crucial in converting carbs to glucose in the body which is how our bodies create energy. YAY!
  2. Hydration – Cucumbers are 95% water, keeping the body hydrated (you KNOW how I feel about hydration) while helping the body eliminate toxins.
  3. Skin & Hair – The skin of the cucumber can be used for our own skin irritations and sunburns. Place a slice over puffy eyes (like you’re in the spa), its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce puffiness. Also, the silicon and sulfur in cucumbers help to stimulate hair growth. Mash up a cucumber (in a Cuisinart is best) and use the mash to rub onto your hair and scalp. You can leave for 20 minutes then rinse out.
  4. Cancer fighters – Cucumbers contain lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and secoisolariciresinol; lignans that have been proven in research studies with reduced risk of several cancer including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and prostate cancer.
  5. Vitamin C – By leaving the skin on (a medium size cuke) you get up to 10% of your daily recommended Vitamin C.
  6. Bad Breath (Eww) –  The phytochemcials in cukes kill bacteria responsible for causing bad breath. Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds,
  7. Hungover? No More! – To avoid a morning hangover (hurts so bad these days!) eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients, reducing the intensity of both hangover and headache. (HINT: forego that “last” drink of the night…you REALLY don’t need it)
  8. WEIGHTLOSS – Cukes are low calories and high water content…an ideal diet for people who are looking for weight loss. The high water content and dietary fiber in cucumbers are very effective in ridding the body of toxins from the digestive system, aiding digestion. Also, eating cucumbers daily can remedy chronic constipation.
  9. Diabetes, Cholesterol & Blood Pressure – Cucumber juice contains a hormone which is needed by the pancreatic cells for producing insulin which research has proven to help diabetics. Thanks to more research, scientists found that a compound called sterols in cucumbers may help reduce cholesterol levels. Cucumbers contain a lot of potassium, magnesium and fiber which effectively regulate blood pressure (GOOD for hight and low pressure).
  10. Joint Health – We gotta keep you moving for a LONG time and cucumbers contain an excellent source of silica, known to promote joint health by strengthening connective tissues.

Loads of good stuff in these little green numbers…go to your farmers market to day and grab a few. Chop ’em, put ’em in your water, chew on ’em before you hit the gym or go to bed and know you’re fillin’ up and losin’ weight!

Ahhh…

I’m DONE with the cold…or in my mind I am anyway. I want to be warm and happy and in WAY less clothes than I’ve been wearing. I mean I LOVE me some leg warmers, but I’m over it! It’s the end of March and now’s the time to go “out like a lamb”… the weather is supposed to be beautiful this weekend here in New York and the below will be what I’m listening to as I’m runnin’ along the West Side Highway.

August is a month that’s meant to rejuvenate and refresh us to start a new season. In this time when many are on vacation thing seem to slow down. The weather is warm and the vibe is chill. Take advantage of this time, before school begins, before everyone’s back in the office, before “life” begins again. Take time to recharge your so-called batteries and enjoy all of the benefits of the beautiful and warm month!

The Challenge

For the next 7 days I want you to take it easy. If you’re feeling extra stressed, frustrated, exhausted…take a break. Step back for a moment, take a breath and give appreciation for all of the amazing “stuff” in your life and be easy with you. Remember this is a time to refocus and rejuvenate your mind and your body. Give yourself this time to reflect on all that you DO have and change your focus to your excellence.

Try It: It’s a Challenge!

What It Is?

Thursdays on the GETFIERCE TRAINING page are all about challenging ourselves. These challenges are meant to build ourselves up, to feel good, to be strong and to grow! This week’s challenge is all about doing something different.

Just Try It!

If you read my post yesterday you know that last night I Worked It Out with my mentor, Patricia Moreno, and her personal trainer, Pedro Carriedo. It was a great workout and pushed me as a student to new levels. I was drenched with sweat, pushed through the pain and left feeling totally spent and AWESOME. I (yet again) realized that when we reach outside of our own comfort zones that we arrive at the place when we’re able to take it to the next level to see what we’re “really” made of.

The Challenge

For the next 7 days I want you to try something new. It doesn’t need to be major, just something (i.e. take a new route to work, try a new coffee/tea shop in the am, take a different class or instructor, add a different ingredient to your salad..whatever). This will begin to open us up to trying new things and WHO KNOWS…we just might be Mikey and Like It!

For ME

I LOVE LOVE LOVE to dance! About 2 years ago I took my very first dance! WHAT? I know! Don’t get me wrong, I tend to think I “kill it” on the dance floor, but it’s a whole ‘nother ball game when you’re being taught choreography. (Wait, full disclosure I did take one dance class at Boston Ballet when I was 6, but hated the mauve leotard I was forced to wear and refused to go back.)

I had heard my girl, Erika Shannon, taught a bad ass Hip Hop class and so I chose her to pop my dance class cherry. I was terrified, but Erika is a friend and mentor to me so it was perfect. I loved class! It felt like I was high. I was dancing, sweating, moving my body, shakin’ my ass and it felt so good. I then tried Patricia Moreno’s dance class which was much more lyrical at the time. I was a TOTAL fish out of water, all the spinning, kick ball changes and shuffles…I was LOST! I stuck with it, though and today I take class regularly…in the FRONT ROW!

I love the way dance makes me feel, but I’m terrified to try new instructors! I don’t want to look dumb or feel lost in the movement, I want to be the best, I like to be popular and know all the other “kids” in class…I revert back to a 3rd grader…you know what comes next…NOT NO MO’! I’m committing to taking NEW dance teachers and giving it a full go! This is what I’m committed to trying this week. What will YOU do?

What It Is?

Move It

It’s been a month sine I’ve issued a challenge for you. It’s time! For the next 7 days the game is to commit to moving for 45 minutes. It can be running, dancing, walking, climbing, swimming, cycling…whatever makes YOU happy. I want you to get out there and move your bod. It will not only make you healthier, but I’m betting it will make you happier too!

For ME

I mentioned to you last Monday how hard it was for me to get back into the game after being on vacation. This is my FIRST weekend I’m not traveling this summer, YAY! I’ll have loads of time and what that means usually is that I procrastinate even more! Do you ever get that feeling? When I have LOADS to do I get SO MUCH done, but when I have time it seems that nothing gets done. This weekend I’m not slipping up, I’m going ALL IN with you guys, I’m committed to having fantastic workouts this weekend (even when I’m not paid for it!) We’re fierce and gettin’ fierce(R)!

It Was a Challenge…AND It WORKS!

It Doesn’t Take Long!

On Thursdays I post a challenge to help us raise our proverbial bars. I wanted to share a happy change with you and to show you that it doesn’t have to take long to get what you’ve long desired. A little backstory for you…on June 14th I posted the challenge below.

The Game

The challenge is to, like Ron Popeil (famed inventor and Nobel Prize winner, who knew?) says, “Set it and forget it!”. Set your alarm for 3 random times during the day (during awake hours). I want you to put in the subject line of the alarm what it is you want. Huh? What I mean is, write that thing that you’re going for, the body, the job, the love and I want you to put in the subject line “I am____.” Fill in the blank with YOUR wish for yourself and act as if you already ARE it, like you already have it, it is DONE. So many times we get caught up in the -ish of the day, the stuff we “have to” do that we forget what our BIG goals and dreams are. Let this alarm be a reminder to what is REALLY important to you so that all of the other moments in the day are in line with your vision.

My Turn and IT WORKED!

Before I started this challenge I had been speaking with a dear friend. She reminded me that what I was putting out there is what I was getting in return. She reminded me that our words are powerful and by focusing on the NOT having or wanting I was getting more not having and wanting in return. I knew that, but wasn’t putting it into action. I decided to play my own game full out and lead by example! I set my alarm for 11:30AM, 3PM & 8PM with the subject, “I AM love! I’m in an awesome loving relationship, the stuff movies are made of. I’m the hope, the example that it ALL happens.” The location of this “appointment” is my heart.

I had been playing this game for 4 days. I felt amazing, like the love I had been seeking for so long was here. That next Tuesday, June 19th, I had the most amazing phone conversation with a very special man. I knew “it” was working, we spoke for an hour and a half and I didn’t want to get off the phone. On Thursday we went out on our first date and I was hooked…totally smitten, head over heels. He’s fantastic, I feel like a fairy princess when I’m with him and he’s coming home to meet my family this week…WHAT? I know, it sounds a bit bananas, I’m totally in love, but when you’re in you’re in!

It FEELS amazing! I want you to know that it doesn’t take long to get to the place that you’ve been desiring. NOW the thing to do is act like you HAVE it already. Let the energy that you put out work FOR you. Now when my alarm goes off at 11:30AM, 3PM and 8PM I get SO excited knowing that it really DOES all work out!

I know it’s not Thursday, but challenge yourself today. If you haven’t already done so put it out there…what do YOU want? Write it in the I AM and have it “ring” you 3x each day. Let it be your reminder that you ARE already what you’re wanting. You have it within you, you are not lacking anything…you are everything!

Drink It In: It’s a Challenge!

What It Is?

Thursdays on the GETFIERCE TRAINING page are all about challenging ourselves. These challenges are meant to build ourselves up, to feel good, to be strong and to grow! This week’s challenge is all about giving our bodies what they need.

The Game

We’ve played this one before in Week 1 and it Week 11. Now we’re in 22 and it’s time to do it again. It’s hot out, our bodies are letting go of more water than in the cooler months, so we need to stay focused on keeping properly hydrated to maintain our body’s proper function.

For Me

I teach 17 classes a week, Cycling, intenSati, GETFIERCE Strength, Core…I’m thirsty! As summer begins today the sumer gets hotter and hotter (100 degrees in NYC today),  I’m trying to stay as hydrated as possible with this hot hot heat, 3 liters and counting today.

I read this awesome article about the benefits of hydration by Dr. Batmanghelidj. I’ve read a bunch of Dr. “Batman’s” info before, but this one it really hit home every time I read it. With all of my drinking I’M still not drinking enough. There are countless and VERY pricey solutions to our health issues, but one of the easiest fixes and Dr. B might say, ‘cures’, is water. The best part is it’s FREE!

Are you dehydrated? Mild to moderate dehydration is likely to cause:

  • Dry, sticky mouth
  • Sleepiness or tiredness
  • Thirst
  • Decreased urine output
  • Few or no tears when crying
  • Dry skin
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
If you’re experiencing any of the above give it a whirl! What do you have to lose (besides weight)?. Dehydration is often mistaken for hunger and drives us to reach for snacks as opposed to a glass…BONUS!

I’m starting a 60 day challenge and would love you to join me. The challenge is drinking at least 2 liters of water each day. Be focused and mindful about the amount of water you’re taking in. Set aside a liter bottle and fill it in the morning. Drink it all the way down and then refill, make sure it’s gone before bed to ensure you’ve hit your mark.
